On Wednesday night over a hundred people protested as Southwark Council agreed to cut £76 million from services and sack up to 1,000 staff. The Labour-led council adopted a high-profile media strategy which involves lamenting the cuts they are 'forced' to make, without doing anything to fight them. The BBC reported both on the councillors' 'predicament', and on the protest.
Council trades unionists formed the bulk of the demonstrators, but they were joined by many Southwark service users, including adult education students and representatives of Defend Council Housing. There was also a speaker from the UNITE branch at Kings' College Hospital, which is fighting job losses in the soon-to-be privatised pathology department.
Southwark Save Our Services (SSOS) calls on Labour councillors not to do the government's dirty work, but to stand alongside workers and service users in the borough against the government's attacks.
