NO2EU –Yes to Democracy convener Bob Crow will join sacked Visteon workers outside the company’s Basildon plant on Monday morning (27 April) at 9.30am.
The company, a spin-off of the car giant Ford’s, sacked 600 workers at the Basildon plant and at other plants in Belfast and Enfield without notice on March 31, leaving workers with no redundancy or pension payments.
Bob Crow said that NO2EU electoral alliance, which is standing in the euro elections on June 4, was backing the workers in their fight against employers treating people like commodities “to be thrown away on a whim”.
“This process is being carried out across the EU under EU directives and European Court of Justice rulings that are handing bosses even more powers to undermine workers’ rights and enrich themselves.
“This government should step in sort this mess out rather than shrugging their shoulders and claiming it is nothing to do with them,” the RMT union general secretary said.
Visteon convener Frank Jepson, who is also a candidate in the Eastern region for the NO2EU –Yes to Democracy, welcomed the support for Visteon workers.
“This is the kind of support we need to step up the action and drag Ford’s back to the table and to fulfill their obligations to the Visteon workforce,” he said.
No2EU – Yes to Democracy has organised a benefit for the Visteon workers at the Castle Mayne pub, Nethermayne, Basildon on Wednesday April 29 7.30pm featuring music from the One Tree Hillbillies.
